You just can't escape politics these days — not even at the Mall of America during the holiday shopping season.
On Saturday morning, the megamall was the scene of a political demonstration dubbed the "YUGE Trump Flag Drop" by its organizers.
It was the brainchild of one Sheri Auclair, a Republican activist who served as a Minnesota delegate at the 2016 Republican National Convention (where she made news for sporting an American flag shawl).
At around 11:30 a.m., Auclair and her supporters converged in the rotunda, where — according to a Facebook video she posted (below) — police were already waiting for them, apparently having gotten wind of the plan:
Auclair says they agreed to police demands to scale back the event, but the titular flag drop seems to have happened anyway, judging by these tweets (and the photo above):
The group, which Auclair says numbered more than 100 people, ended up displaying American flags and Blue Lives Matter flags in the rotunda and singing the national anthem:
The last high-profile demonstration to take place at MOA was a protest organized by Black Lives Matter following the death of Jamar Clark in Minneapolis in 2014.
That event led to dozens of arrests and the filing of charges against a number of the protesters.
