Tweed Tuohy Foundation gives $1M to namesake museum at UMD

The University of Minnesota Duluth announced Thursday a generous donation for the university's Tweed Museum of Art from the Alice Tweed Tuohy Foundation, the Duluth News-Tribune reports.

UMD says the Santa Barbara, California-based Alice Tweed Tuohy Foundation donated $1 million to the museum. The donation comes at a crucial time as the museum is campaigning to raise $4.2 million for its renovation.

University Chancellor Lendly Black tells the News Tribune says the donation “will serve as the catalyst for needed renovation and expansion.”

Northland's NewsCenter says the museum opened to the public in 1950 out of George and Alice Tweed's home in Duluth, and moved to its home on the UMD campus eight years later when it outgrew its space.

Today, Black says, "We have a collection of more than 9,000 pieces of art that reflect our past our present and also point to a very exciting future."

Attending the announcement of the donation was Tweed Tuohy's granddaughter, Alice O'Connor, who tells Northland's NewsCenter her grandmother would be "tickled" by growth of the museum.

"I think she would be very pleased to see where it has come compared to where it was," O'Connor says.

Tweed Museum officials say that renovations are not expected to begin for another year.

Tweed Touhy remarried after her husband's death in 1946. She was born in Warsaw, Minnesota, in 1871, and died in 1973.
