Twin Cities band behind classic hit 'Liar Liar' celebrates at Taste of Minnesota

In between bites of some of the best nosh Minnesota has to offer, you might hear the familiar refrain of "Liar, Liar" in Waconia this weekend.

The quirky psychedelic song was the only hit from the Castaways, the Twin Cities band who will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the track's release with a performance at the "Taste of Minnesota" fair this weekend.

Called "one of Minnesota's most indelible singles" by The Current, "Liar, Liar" was released in 1965 and eventually ended up on the soundtracks of popular films, including "Good Morning, Vietnam" and "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels."

The band was formed in Richfield, Minnesota for the sole purpose of performing at a frat party, AllMusic writes, and faded not long after their brief time on the charts.

Since then, however, the Castaways have regrouped with founding member, keyboardist and vocalist Jim Donna at the helm; now, they're a popular cover group who still play shows around their home state, according to the band's website.

They'll take the main stage on Saturday, the Fourth of July, at noon.

And they're by far not the only entertainment – the fair's free concert lineup also includes Foghat, Badfinger, P.O.D., Phil Vassar and many more.

Turtle cheesecake on a stick – and many more food highlights

We would also be remiss in our duties if we didn't mention the centerpiece of a Taste of Minnesota: the grub.

The offerings rival those of the state fair, with turtle cheesecake on a stick, fry bread tacos and pretzel-coated cheese curds among some of the more colorful treats this year (you can view a full list by clicking here)

The event, which kicked off Thursday and runs through Sunday, is in its second year at the Carver County Fairgrounds in Waconia, after having been forced to relocate from its usual St. Paul digs due to heavy flooding last year.
