van Gogh's 'Olive Trees' are growing in Minnesota, thanks to crop artist

There's a masterpiece taking shape in flyover country.

Vincent van Gogh's painting "Olive Trees" is coming to life in a field near the Twin Cities airport, courtesy of a renown crop artist commissioned by the Minneapolis Institute of Arts.

As it celebrates its 100th birthday, the MIA says it's been looking to bring art outside the museum's walls in ways that surprise the community.

That's what prompted them to hire artist Stan Herd to plant the field in Eagan, giving Minnesota its own olive trees by the end of the growing season.

Herd says on his website he's been creating "monumental earthworks" for 40 years.

This one will depict a painting that hangs at the MIA. It's one of 15 canvases of olive trees van Gogh produced in 1889, soon after interning himself in an asylum in southern France.

Museum officials say the location was selected to allow a view from the planes using Minneapolis St. Paul International Airport.

The field is on land that's part of the Thomson Reuters campus in Eagan.

It's expected to reach its full glory in September, but the work started with spring planting and Herd has been tending the 1.2 acres since then.

This week he gave the Star Tribune a look at what goes into the project.
