Bob Dylan performed on the penultimate episode of "Late Show with David Letterman" Tuesday night – becoming maybe the final musical guest in the iconic show's history.

The 73-year-old Dylan performed "The Night We Called it a Day," a track from his 2015 album "The Shadows in the Night."

He first appeared on a Letterman late-night talk show in 1984, and his last performance on one came way back in 1993.

Letterman, who is 68 years old, had some kind words for the Minnesota-born musician, recounting a time when he asked asked his son, Harry, what the two most important things to know in the world are – reenforcing things he'd taught the young boy.

"There's really only two things you need to know," Letterman said.

One, you have to be nice to other people.

Two, the greatest song writer of modern times is Bob Dylan.

"That's all you need to know in life," he added, before introducing Dylan.

Letterman's final "The Late Show" is Wednesday night. Guests have been kept under wraps. It'll be his 6,028th episode, the New York Times says, and will cap a 33-year career that makes him the longest-running late-night talk show host ever.

Here are a few earlier Dylan performances on Letterman.
