Watch: Madonna and Stevie Wonder pay tribute to Prince

Prince was honored at the Billboard Music Awards Sunday night.

"All of us live in the land of music and his departure was an earthquake," Roots drummer Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson said, before Madonna – dressed in purple and sitting on a purple throne – emerged on the stage.

She sang "Nothing Compares 2 U," which was written by Prince. Then in a surprise move, she pulled Stevie Wonder, who was wearing a purple scarf, onstage for a rendition of "Purple Rain." Watch the performance below:

Madonna and Prince were born the same year and recorded the 1989 tune "Love Song" together. But when she was picked to honor Prince at the award show it caused some controversy because "her chops as a musician" aren't at the top of the list of her "phenomenal [talents]," Billboard explains.

While some said the tribute was moving and fitting, others took to Twitter criticizing the performance.

But, as Vulture points out, Questlove defended the awards show in several tweets Sunday night, saying "the Purple Standard is hard boots to fill." Here are a few of his tweets:
