Watch: Storm sends dangerous waves crashing along the North Shore

Winter Storm Xanto is pounding the Duluth area with huge waves.

While Winter Storm Xanto pounds southern Minnesota and the metro area with historic snow and blizzard conditions, the North Shore along Lake Superior from Duluth to Two Harbors is being battered with huge, icy waves.

The Duluth office of the National Weather Service says it's already received many reports of damage from the waves, and there could be damage along the South Shore, too.

Andrew Krueger captured these videos of the waves crashing along the shore, with the water quickly freezing to the brush and trees near the rocky shore.

The spray of lake water onto the rocks and shoreline are creating treacherous conditions, and the National Weather Service has issued a Lakeshore flood warning in effect until 10 a.m. Sunday.

"Northeast winds of 20 to 30 mph and gusts to near 50 mph will gradually decrease tonight, but will remain strong enough to produce very large waves creating flooding and causing damage to areas along the shores of Lake Superior. This will impact areas along the lake from near Two Harbors to the Twin Ports and east along the south shore to Saxon Harbor, though not all shores will be impacted depending on the strength of the ice present. Beaches and shoreline areas which are oriented from northwest to southeast are at the greatest risk for infrastructure damage and beach erosion. Flooding and damage is ongoing in Duluth`s Canal Park. Breaking waves will create hazardous conditions on breakwaters, jetties, and piers. The large and dangerous waves can deposit riprap and large chunks of ice on beaches and roads which are near the shore."

People are advised to stay away from the shore because the slippery conditions and power of the waves can put you at risk of being swept into the lake.

According to the Duluth News Tribune, thousands of people were on the shoreline to capture photos and video of the powerful waves.

The Tribune adds that Duluth police reported injuries from people walking on the ice on the Park Point beaches.
