In news that will unite Cake Eaters and non-Cake Eaters alike, Disney has revealed the first look at its latest reboot: The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers.
Ok, so the announcement was lost a bit among the myriad of huge news from Disney on Thursday, which include a new Obi Wan Kenobi and Ahsoka series in the "Star Wars" universe, the first look at Marvel's Loki series, a Buzz Lightyear origin movie, and dates for new Captain Marvel, Black Panther, Doctor Strange, Ant Man, and Guardians of the Galaxy movie.
But the return of Emilio Estevez as Gordon Bombay to the ice will pique the interest of many a child of the 90s, and it has a particular place in Minnesota's heart given the original movie and part of the second was set and filmed in Minneapolis.
Unfortunately, the new Disney+ series is not being filmed in Minnesota, with the cheaper location of Vancouver getting that honor. But a quick look at the trailer shows a stock shot of downtown Minneapolis – so it will still be set here.
Joining Estevez in the cast is Lauren Graham (The Gilmore Girls), who is the mother of a youth hockey player who gets thrown off the District 5 Ducks team.
Since Bombay's departure, his old Ducks team has become a state championship-winning leviathan – think Edina or St. Thomas Academy – prompting Graham's character to launch a new team for cast-off players, with Bombay the coach.
It appears a running joke in the series will be the amount of money parents are now spending on youth sports, with one parent bringing her child's private trainer and "pediatric sports psychologist" to a Ducks practice.
There's no release date yet for the show, and there's no word yet on whether any more familiar faces – namely Joshua Jackson's Charlie Conway – will make an appearance.
