WCCO meteorologist helps man propose to girlfriend

After a week of forecasts about extreme weather conditions, WCCO meteorologist Chris Shaffer got a chance Thursday to deliver a bit of sunshine to a couple viewers.

The station says that during Schaffer's "On the Spot" segment Thursday night, the weatherman helped a Monticello man named Luke propose to his girlfriend, Ally (no last names were given).

Luke set the table for the proposal by making sure he and his girlfriend were watching the station's 6 p.m. newscast. Then Schaffer put up a photo of the couple during his weather segment and said, "By the way, Ally, Luke has a question for you. It's kind of a big deal. One of those lifelong questions."

Luke then proceeded to get down on one knee and propose to Ally, who said, "Yes."

Ally told the station that she had a feeling something was up Thursday, because Luke was acting so excited. Still, she didn't suspect it was going to be a marriage proposal.

Luke wanted to propose to Ally before she flew back to Colorado for a month to finish school.

Normally, viewers put Shaffer on the spot during the segment with their questions. The weatherman said the marriage proposal idea was a first for "On the Spot."

For those thinking about a proposal themselves (Valentine's Day is coming up, after all), wedding blog The Knot has posted a list of "50 Romantic Ways to Propose," including ideas for proposals in public, at home, and using tech tools like iPods and web pages.
