When 5-year-old Isabella Gregory and her mom walked into a McDonald's to use the restroom, they recognized a group of men who were sitting down to eat.

Isabella's mom, Sarah Yockey, had told her daughter about a funeral for Kentucky State Police trooper Joseph Ponder, who died in the line of duty, WDRB reports. The group of men included members of the Kentucky State Police and a sergeant from the Ohio Highway Patrol. All had come from Ponder's funeral.

"We drove all the way from Ashland, had left at 5:30 a.m. and none of us had eaten anything all day," trooper Eric Homan told the station. "We were physically and emotionally drained."

According to Today, Isabella told her mom that she wanted to buy ice cream for the officers to cheer them up. "I told her that would be an amazing idea, so we did that," Sarah says.

"She used her allowance she earned this past week to put smiles on their faces," Yockey said. "She said, 'Their friend died, and it's not fair because he has a family too.'"

The sweet gesture struck a chord with the mourning officers. "We needed that!" Homan wrote in the above Facebook post. "Relief comes in all different shapes and sizes, thank you for supporting us Isabella."
