Childhood sweethearts Jeanette and Alexander Toczko died just a few weeks shy of their 75th wedding anniversary.

"They were boyfriend and girlfriend when they were 8 years old," their son Richard tells ABC affiliate KGTV.

The couple married in 1940 before moving to San Diego in the early 1970s. The pair was inseparable, according to their daughter Aimee Toczko-Cushman. "Their hearts beat as one for as long as I can remember."

So when Jeanette and Alexander said they wanted to die in each other's arms, their children did everything they could to make their wish came true.

Hospice arranged the couple's beds alongside each other, ensuring that even in sickness they would be able to hold each other.

Shortly after an impromptu celebration of their 75th wedding anniversary – held a few weeks prior to the actual date – Alexander passed away.

"He died in her arms, which is exactly what he wanted," The couple's daughter says. "I went in there and told my mother he was gone; she hugged him and she said, 'See, this is what you wanted. You died in my arms and I love you. I love you, wait for me, I'll be there soon.'"

Approximately 24 hours later, Jeanette kept her word to Alexander.
