With the Fourth of July weekend in high gear, Minnesotans spent the day (and night) celebrating our nation's birthday in a variety of ways, from parades to picnics to beach days - and finished off the festivities with fireworks displays in many communities.

Here are some scenes from earlier in the day:

National Senior Games

The Twin Cities is hosting the National Senior Games, an Olympic-like competition that runs from July 3 - July 16 and features more than 10,000 athletes age 50 and older competing for medals across 19 events.

Venues include the University of Minnesota, University of St. Thomas and the Minneapolis Convention Center.

Admission to the events is free and open to the public. For more information, check out the website.

'Prairie Home Companion'

It's the 41st anniversary of Garrison Keillor's popular public radio show "A Prairie Home Companion," and spectators sprawled out on the Macalester College great lawn to watch the live broadcast Saturday evening.

APHC's first broadcast was on July 6, 1974, also at Macalester in St. Paul.

Garrison, 72, recently announced he's going to start transitioning off the show and has named musician Chris Thile the new host of the program.
