What's open and closed on New Year's Day 2020 in Minnesota?
Happy New Year! Here's what's open and closed in Minnesota on New Year's Day.
Banks
You won't find many banks open in Minnesota today, with most observing New Year's Day as a national holiday. This includes Bremer Bank, TCF Bank, U.S. Bank and Wells Fargo. This includes banks inside grocery stores.
Post Offices
It's a federal holiday, so U.S. Post Offices will be closed and there won't be any deliveries.
UPS and FedEx also won't be making any deliveries today, though their critical (ie. pricey) services are still available.
Malls and stores
New Year's Day is a bi shopping day, so most malls, supermarkets and chain stores in Minnesota will be open, though their hours may vary for the holiday. The Mall of America, for example, is opening an hour later than usual, at 10 a.m.
Check your local store for hours.
Transit
Metro Transit buses and the light rail will be following holiday schedules, which you can find here. There will be no Northstar rail service today.
The Minnesota Valley Transit Authority will be running weekend schedules on eight routes, and no services on other routes. Other transit providers will be running similarly reduced schedules. Check your local provider for details.
Parking
Parking meters will not be enforced in Minneapolis or St. Paul, so street parking is free.
Some meters, such as those at Minneapolis parks, could still require payment, so check the meter before you leave your vehicle.
Government buildings
All local, state and federal services are closed for the day.
Garbage collection
If your garbage day falls on New Year's Day, expect it to be picked up on Jan. 2.
