Pups, pooches and purebreds - oh my! St. Paul is getting a little bit harrier this weekend with the Land O'Lakes Kennel Dog Show.

The RiverCentre will be taken over by almost more than 2,000 dogs this weekend for the event. The obedience and rally competition started Friday and continues Saturday and Sunday.

The dogs are all competing for the gloried "Best in Show" title. The event website says 155 breeds are vying for the title.

Want to melt over the cuteness before the event? Local photogs can't get enough of the shaggy dogs.

The Star Tribune did a portrait session sizing up the local competitors. Get a behind the scenes look of the shoot.

WCCO's Gordy Leach also takes viewers behind the scenes, talking with a handler and pet portrait artist showcasing at the event.

What to expect

A new event is added this year called "Partners in Performance." Search and rescue dogs, police dogs and assist dogs will give a 30-minute demonstration showing off their skills.

The big event Saturday is the Midwest Region Top Junior Handler competition. The handlers are under 18 and come from 15 states to compete.

Spectators will also see more than 70 vendors to fulfill all their canine needs.

Behind-the-scenes tours are offered hourly from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. This is included in the price of admission. Kids can take home doggie bags, while Mom and Dad can walk away with advice on what breeds would be best for their family.

Event Hours:
Friday, January 2 – 8 a.m. – 7 p.m.
Saturday, January 3 – 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Sunday, January 4 – 8 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.
