Why this Saturday's a good day to adopt a pet

Expand your family at a reduced price

Most people seem to like dogs and cats, or at least one of the two. And pretty much everybody likes a chance to save money.

What makes Saturday, August 19 such a good day is that you can combine those likes by saving money on the cost of adopting a pet.

It's a national thing called the Clear the Shelters campaign. TV stations owned by NBC and Telemundo join up with animal shelters around the country to lower adoption fees for one day.

This is their third year doing it and so far more than 70,000 pets have been adopted nationwide.

3 Minnesota shelters taking part

The Twin Cities NBC station, KARE 11, is working with three shelters that are offering discounts:

  • Pet Haven Animal Rescue in Richfield
  • Crossroads Animal Shelter in Buffalo
  • Animal Ark in Hastings

Crossroads, for example, has slashed its adoption fees in half for the day. So you can get a dog for $150 or a cat for $75.

Animal Ark is offering $50 off the adoption fee for any adult dog or cat. Pet Haven is holding its adoption event at Richfield's Petco store, not at the shelter, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Crossroads took part in last year's Clear the Shelters and they say the 30 pets that got adopted are a single day record for them. This year they've set a goal of finding homes for all the dogs and cats that have been at the shelter for six months or longer.

Pet Haven particularly wants to find a home for the beagle pictured at the top of the page. His name is August (or Auggie) and he's 14 but they say he doesn't act like it at all. There's more on Auggie here. His adoption fee has been reduced to $100.

Adoption fees

Fees vary from one shelter to another but are generally a few hundred dollars, according to Pet Finder. They say paying the fee can actually wind up saving you money, though. That's because the fee often covers things like a veterinary exam, spaying or neutering, vaccinations, and heartworm tests for dogs or feline leukemia tests for cats.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals estimates that 6.5 million dogs and cats per year go into U.S. animal shelters. They say nearly half of them get adopted and that percentage has been going up in recent years.
