When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
If anyone said "mermaid," then you're in the right place. If you didn't say that, well, you should still read because this is fascinating.
Hope McAlister has finally come to the attention of Minnesota's media for her life as a professional mermaid.
The 25-year-old from Austin, Minnesota, told the Rochester Post Bulletin she happened upon the niche world of silicon mermaid tails on Instagram while looking for a hobby three years ago, after completing military service.
What started as a hobby has turned into a career, in which according to her website she now gets hired for children's birthday parties and mermaid tail swimming lessons, charging from $50-an-hour.
Going by the professional name Luna Belle and performing currently as "Amaya" the mermaid, McAlister uses her swim team and lifeguard experience to maneuver underwater while wearing a 30-pound silicon tail and fin.
She described her tail as akin to "putting on a rubber glove that is too sizes too small," to the Post Bulletin, but says it's worth to "inspire magic" in the eyes of the children she performs for.
