You'll no longer find this color in a box of Crayola crayons

But Crayola is adding a new color!

Sorry Dandelion lovers.

Crayola recently said it would be retiring a color on Friday – National Crayon Day – but the crayon company broke the news a day early, announcing on Facebook Thursday it's retiring the yellow-hued Dandelion from its array of 120 crayon colors.

Dandelion Retires!

Surprise! Our beloved Dandelion had a case of wanderlust and decided to announce his retirement early. There’s no taming an adventurous spirit. Celebrate and meet him tomorrow #NationalCrayonDay #CelebrateDandelion

But there's good news. A box of crayons can't be one short, so Crayola plans to hold a contest to name the new color, which is in the blue family, the company said Friday.

It's not clear why Crayola chose to retire Dandelion, especially since it's so young. NPR says the color was introduced in 1990 when Crayola retired eight crayons: Maize, Lemon Yellow, Blue Gray, Raw Umber, Green Blue, Orange Red, Orange Yellow and Violet Blue.

Crayola also retired four colors in 2003. They were: Blizzard Blue, Magic Mint, Mulberry and Teal Blue, NPR reports. That year, people voted to save Burnt Sienna.

Crayola crayons were unveiled way back in 1903 with a box of eight crayons – black, brown, blue, red, violet, orange, yellow, and green – the same colors you can buy in the eight-pack of crayons today, the company's website says.
