Young tubers rescued after floating away on river

It wasn't quite a relaxing experience for two Minnesotans.

A relaxing float down a lazy river turned into an emergency scenario this week when two tubers broke free from their friends and had to be rescued.

The group of four was floating down the Sauk River in St. Cloud on Wednesday when the tubes carrying a 17-year-old boy and 7-year-old girl broke free and began floating away.

The group had stopped by the Boy Scout Bridge in Whitney Park when they became separated just before 8 p.m., the Stearns County Sheriff's Office says.

The 17-year-old was found a short distance from the bridge, but the girl floated a half-mile down the river and was getting pretty close to entering the Mississippi when she was rescued, the St. Cloud Times notes.

Search teams were alerted to her location when someone who lives next to the Sauk River, on Mill Pond Drive, heard someone screaming.

The sheriff's office notes that neither child was wearing a life jacket. Both were unharmed.

The Stearns County website says the 90-mile Sauk River gets more rapid as it approaches the Mississippi, with the St. Cloud section providing "a stretch of white water for nearly 9 river miles."

"This section should be attempted with caution at all times," the site notes.

Despite this, Riverfacts still classes the river as "easy" for kayakers.
