A fatal crash involving a semi and a car on a highway southwest of Duluth left one person dead and another critically injured early Wednesday morning.

The Minnesota State Patrol reports that the crash happened just after 3:20 a.m. on Hwy. 2 in Proctor. The crash report says a 29-year-old Duluth man driving a Nissan Altima was eastbound on Hwy. 2 when he crossed the lane line and was hit by a semi driver who was traveling in the opposite direction.

The semi wound up in the ditch while the Nissan came to a rest in the eastbound lane of the highway.

Tragically, the driver of the car was pronounced dead after being transported to a hospital in Duluth. He has been identified by the State Patrol as Jesse Lee Muellner, 29, of Duluth.

A 28-year-old Proctor woman who was riding in the car as a passenger suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to Essentia Health-St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth.

Neither person in the Nissan was wearing a seat belt, according to the State Patrol.

The semi driver was not injured.
