1 dead, 1 critically injured after crash on Interstate 35W in Bloomington

One man died and a passenger was critically injured when a car left the interstate in the south metro and crashed into a tree over the weekend. 

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the accident happened around 12:15 p.m. Saturday on Interstate 35W at West 94th Street in Bloomington. 

The crash report says a 2001 Mercury Marquis was southbound on the interstate in the center-right lane when it "drifted over lanes of traffic" into the right ditch and struck a tree. 

The driver of the car, 52-year-old Colvin McVay Jr., of Burnsville, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt, the State Patrol notes, with the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office reporting that he died of multiple blunt force injuries. 

A 48-year-old Minneapolis man was a passenger in the vehicle and suffered life-threatening injuries. He was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center. 

The State Patrol is investigating the the crash.
