1 dead after 911 caller reports assault in Fosston, Minnesota

A cause of death has not been announced.

Authorities in northwest Minnesota are investigating after a person died following a report of an assault early Sunday morning.

The incident happened around 3:45 a.m. in Fosston, according to a media release from the Polk County Sheriff's Office, with a 911 caller reported an assault followed by a second 911 caller saying someone was trying to break into their home.

Once at the scene, deputies saw one man standing near the intersection of 8th St. NW and N. Mark Ave., and another male laying on the curbside, not breathing.

Deputies performed CPR on the victim, but he was later pronounced dead.

A cause of death has not been provided and "there is no information that a firearm was involved," the sheriff's release says.

The man standing at the intersection, identified as a 29-year-old from Fergus Falls, was arrested and booked into the Northwest Regional Correctional Center in Crookston. No formal charges have been filed.

The case is now being investigated by the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
