1 dead after semi goes over bridge wall, crashing into a creek

A semi driver was killed Monday when his rig crashed and went over a bridge wall into a creek in southeast Minnesota. 

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the fatal crash happened around 4:55 a.m. on Hwy. 61 south of Winona in Richmond Township. 

The 2014 International semi was traveling northbound on Hwy. 61 when it went into the median, hit a guardrail and continued northbound over the bridge wall before coming to a rest in Trout Creek. 

The driver of the semi was pronounced dead at the scene and has been identified as 64-year-old Randy Denton Gunderson, of Holmen, Wisconsin. 

Highway 61 runs along the Mississippi River, with Big Trout Creek flowing into the river just north of Great River Bluffs State Park. 

There have been 168 deaths on Minnesota roads so far in 2019, compared to 172 at the same time in 2018, according to the Minnesota Department of Traffic Safety
