One man died Wednesday after floodwaters in northeastern Iowa covered roads and forced residents out of their homes.

Authorities did not immediately identify the man killed when water swept his car off a Winneshiek County road early Wednesday, the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports.

Storms Tuesday night and Wednesday morning dumped as much as eight inches of rain on the area, the National Weather Service says. That's how much fell in the town of Decorah.

MPR News says an emergency shelter opened in Decorah for residents flooded out of their homes.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Upper Iowa River reached a new high water mark in Dorchester when it surpassed the 24 foot level, breaking the old record by nearly two feet.

The Turkey River also set a new record in Spilville, Iowa, when it surpassed 20 feet, the Weather Service says.

The mayor told the Courier that with bridges around Spilville under water, the town had been turned into an island on Wednesday morning.
