One person died in a single-vehicle crash in Maple Grove overnight.

It happened around 3:30 a.m. on westbound Hwy. 610 when a 2005 Ford Taurus struck the bridge abutment on the east side of the bridge at Hemlock Lane, according to the crash report from the Minnesota State Patrol.

The vehicle immediately caught fire and was fully engulfed in flames.

Nineteen-year-old Christian John Schmidt, of Dayton, died in the crash.

As of 6:45 a.m., westbound Hwy. 610 remained closed at Zachary Lane for accident reconstruction. It's not clear when the road will be opened.

Meanwhile, roads in the Twin Cities and most of southern Minnesota could be slippery Thursday morning because of light snow that moved through overnight. Roads in the metro are partially covered in snow/ice (blue shade in the map) while roads in far southern parts of the state, including Mankato, are completely covered in snow/ice (pink shade).
