One person was killed in a plane crash Wednesday night near Parkers Prairie in Otter Tail County, roughly 20 miles north of Alexandria, WCCO reports.

A homeowner in the area reported to Otter Tail County Sheriff's officials that he had heard a loud noise on his property in the 59000 block of County Highway 40, and he had found the downed plane, WCCO reports.

When authorities arrived, they found a small, badly damaged single-engine propeller plane and its pilot, who had suffered extensive trauma and was pronounced dead at the scene, WCCO reports. The pilot was a Minnesota man, but his name was being withheld Wednesday, the Star Tribune reports.

Gayle Snook told Valley News Live that he and his father were the first on the scene.

"I heard the plane come over, and it back fired and it sounded like a crop duster, and I heard a big crash and I didn't know what it was," Snook said. He said it looked like the plane had crashed in some trees.

Officials with the Federal Aviation Administration planned to go to the crash scene Thursday morning to begin an investigation, Valley News reported.
