1 dead in rear-end crash on southern Minnesota highway

One motorist died and two others were injured in a three-vehicle crash in southern Minnesota on Thursday. 

The crash happened around 11:50 a.m. on Hwy. 71 south of Sanborn in Germantown Township, which is located in Cottonwood County. 

According to the State Patrol, the drivers of a 2008 Chevy Silverado and a dump truck were stopped in the northbound lanes of Hwy. 71 near County Road 41 when the driver of a 2005 Silverado rear-ended the dump truck, which then hit the other Chevy pickup. 

The driver of the pickup that caused the crash, Ryan J. Klenken, 37, of Reading, Minnesota, died at the scene, the State Patrol said. 

The driver of the 2008 Silverado, a 64-year-old Sanborn man, was transported to Windom Hospital with non-critical injuries. The dump truck driver, a 56-year-old Springfield man, was also taken to the hospital in Windom with non-critical injuries. 

According to the Minnesota Office of Traffic Safety, there have been 136 deaths on Minnesota roads this year. At the same point in 2019, there had been 145 road fatalities in the state.
