Two separate crashes involving small planes in Minnesota Friday killed one person, while the family involved in the other escaped serious injuries.

The Duluth News Tribune reports that Kevin Ferris, 48, died when the plane he was piloting crashed in a field in the northwestern town of Hawley.

Ferris, owner of The Rose Man flower shop in Duluth, was reportedly flying from Duluth to visit his parents in Moorhead for Easter weekend when the crash occurred. Officials are suspecting foggy conditions led to the crash or emergency landing, the News Tribune says.

Clay County authorities found Ferris dead late Friday afternoon after the airplane was spotted in the field.

Clay County Sheriff Bill Bergquist said that Ferris' family last heard from him as he was flying over Park Rapids, about 60 miles east of Hawley.

Meanwhile, a family of four where flying in a single-engine, fixed-wing airplane the father was piloting crashed on frozen Lake Latoka in Alexandria, the Alexandria Echo Press reports.

Hamid Reza Abbasi, 54, of Edina, was flying with his wife and their two juvenile children on their way to Alexandria Airport when the plane crashed. Abbassi reportedly has a job in Alexandria.

According to the Echo Press, witnesses heard a plane's engine making sputtering noises before hearing a loud bang, which apparently was from the plane's parachute being deployed.

The nose end of the plane cracked through the ice on the lake (pictured, above), appearing to have caused minimal damage to the aircraft, the paper says.

Alexandria and Dakota County officials responded to the scene to secure the area of open water caused by the crash. The family was taken to the home of the Alexandria Police chief for temporary shelter, the paper reported.

WCCO-TV reports that the pilot said the plane experienced mechanical issues as it approached the airport.
