One person was injured during an explosion inside a chemistry lab at the University of Minnesota's Smith Hall around 1 p.m. Tuesday.

According to FOX 9, the explosion occurred shortly after 1 p.m. on the fourth floor of Smith Hall.

The Minnesota Daily says the victim is a graduate student, and was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center with serious burns.

Immediately following the incident, the University of Minnesota tweeted out the following alert.

The building itself houses classrooms, including for the chemistry department, the university's website says. WCCO says the University of Minnesota News Service described it as an organic compound that exploded. The station says there was no fire as a result.

The university hasn't confirmed what caused the explosion. The Star Tribune reports the fire department said there was no structural damage to the building.

A Twitter account run by Professor of Chemistry & Associate Dean Christopher J. Cramer sent out the following.

A little after 5 p.m., the College of Science and Engineering announced Smith Hall was "back open for usual hours."

No information about the victim's identity has been released.
