One person is dead following a crash on snow-and-ice-covered roads in northern Minnesota.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the fatal crash happened in Polk County on River Road near the Kennedy Bridge in East Grand Forks early Thursday around 2:20 a.m.Road conditions were snowy and icy at the time of the crash, with the area on the receiving end of the season's first significant snowfall.
A Honda Accord driven by 30-year-old Marcus Christopher Contreras of Grand Forks was traveling south on River Road when it drove onto the center median and hit the center support of Kennedy Bridge.
Contreras was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt, the State Patrol says.
Grand Forks Air Force Base received a whopping 17.4 inches of snow in the snowstorm, which powered through the Upper Midwest with an intense, narrow band of snow that socked eastern North Dakota.
Minnesota got some snow, although much less than areas just 40-70 miles west. Most locations in northwest Minnesota picked up 2-4 inches of snow, although areas of extreme northwest Minnesota got 6-8 inches.
