A head-on crash involving a Minnesota man has left one person dead and two with "serious injuries" in northwest Wisconsin.

Authorities say 31-year-old Bryce Carlson of Burnsville was driving his Chevy Silverado truck in Balsam Lake Thursday evening when a Dodge SUV traveling the opposite direction apparently crossed the center line and veered towards him.

The Dodge was driven by 60-year-old Valerie Church and carrying passenger James Church, both of Luck, Wisconsin.

"Carlson said he tried to steer out of the way of the Church vehicle, however he was unable to and the vehicles collided," a news release from the Polk County Sheriff's Office says.

The resulting head-on collision dealt serious injuries to the Churches, and both were rushed to St. Croix Regional Medical Center via ambulance.

Sadly, James, 57, died of his injuries.

Also hospitalized was the 21-year-old woman who was riding in Carlson's Chevy. Her wounds were also described as serious by authorities, but neither her condition nor Valerie Church's are known at this time.

It's unclear if Carlson was injured, but he seems to have walked away from the accident.

Authorities say the heavy rain in the area at the time "is believed to be a contributing factor in the crash."

However, the crash is still under investigation.
