$1 million Pillsbury Bake-Off gets modern-parent upgrade

The decades-old Pillsbury baking competition is getting a modern-parent upgrade, the Pioneer Press reports.

The $1 million Pillsbury Bake-Off, which has a 45-year history, this year is accepting only recipes with seven or fewer ingredients that take less than 30 minutes to prepare (not including baking time).

Pillsbury says its core customers – busy moms – want quick-and-easy dishes, the newspaper reports. Also new this year, finalists are being chosen in a public vote. The company was inspired by today's "America votes" culture, the contest manager told the Pioneer Press.

The Bake-Off was created in 1949 by Minneapolis' Pillsbury Co., which is now a division of Golden Valley-based General Mills Inc.

Judges in November will crown a $1 million grand prize winner in Las Vegas from 100 finalists competing in three categories.
