Just one Minnesota student remains in the 2013 Scripps National Spelling Bee. Five spellers from the state had started the 281-student competition, but only Emma Greenlee, an eighth-grader at Mesabi East High School in Aurora, Minn., is still standing.

Greenlee, an honor roll student and soccer and track athlete, aspires to a career as a biologist of some sort, her bee bio says. She was also in the 2012 Scripps National Spelling Bee.

The field has been narrowed to 42, with the semifinals Thursday afternoon and the finals Thursday night. The top speller wins more than $30,000 in cash and prizes.

The spellers range in age from 8 to 14 years old, but most are 12 to 14. Here are more fast facts about the spellers that might surprise you (only 25 are home-schooled).

Over the years, the annual bee has become a widely watched event. ESPN carries the finals live, and the bee was the subject of the 2002 documentary, "Spellbound." Here's six things you didn't know about the bee, from Time magazine.
