A chaotic night in south Minneapolis turned deadly when a store owner allegedly shot someone attempting to loot their store.

Minneapolis police say the shooting happened around 9:05 p.m. outside Cadillac Pawn and Jewelry at 1538 E. Lake St., which is approximately 10 blocks west of where protesting and rioting erupted outside the 3rd Minneapolis Police Precinct.

Police originally thought they were responding to a stabbing. On arrival, they located a man lying on the sidewalk who wasn't breathing and had no pulse.

Lifesaving measures were attempted by officers and deputies but the victim was pronounced dead after being transported to Hennepin County Medical Center.

A graphic video posted to Twitter, which we will not share, shows police and deputies performing chest compressions on the victim.

Police have not confirmed that the victim was shot by the store owner, only saying at this time that "circumstances surrounding this death are currently being looked into and the Minneapolis Police Department has initiated a death investigation.

A man was arrested and taken into custody in connection to the shooting.

The identity of the victim will be released at a later stage.

What started as peaceful protesting of the police-involved death of George Floyd developing into riots that saw numerous fires started Wednesday night and Thursday morning. Multiple businesses were burned to the ground, including AutoZone, Wendy's, a cellphone store and an affordable housing building that was under construction.

Looting of stores happened all along Lake Street, as far west as the Uptown area.
