1-year-old airlifted after house fire in central Minnesota

The girl's mother was taken to a hospital to treat burns and smoke inhalation.

A 1-year-old girl was airlifted to a hospital after being found inside a burning home in northern Minnesota.

The Wadena County Sheriff's Office reports that the fire happened around 9:40 p.m. Wednesday at a house on the 400 block of Brown St. NW in Verndale. The 911 caller alerted authorities that a 1-year-old child was still inside the home.

Multiple law enforcement agencies and the Verndale Fire Department responded to the home and saw flames on the upstairs floor of the home where the child was. Responders made several attempts to find the girl, but they could get close enough due to heat and smoke from the blaze.

The Verndale and Wadena fire departments eventually made their way into the home through an upstairs window and found the girl, who was removed from the house and taken by ambulance to Tri-County Hospital, before being airlifted to Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis.

The girl's mother was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Staples. She suffered burns and smoke inhalation while attempting to rescue her daughter.

The conditions of the girl and her mother are unknown at this time.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
