A southeastern Minnesota 1-year-old died Sunday, more than a week after falling into a water basin outside his family's home.

The Rochester Post-Bulletin reports Lincoln Tews had been playing with his siblings outside of the residence (on the 400 block of East Eyota Street in Dover) on the morning of June 24.

KAAL reports when the mother called them in, Tews didn't return. An 8-year-old went outside to see where Tews was, and found him in a water basin – about 17 inches tall and 18 inches wide – the family uses to wash their feet before coming inside.

The Post-Bulletin says investigators determined the kids hadn't been outside more than five minutes.

Tews was taken to the hospital, and his progress since that day has been detailed on a CaringBridge page set up for the boy.

On Sunday, July 5, Tews died.

A wake will be held Wednesday at 4 p.m., and a funeral service the next day at 11 a.m., both at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lewiston.

There is also a memorial fund set up at Bremer Bank to help with funeral and medical care costs. Click here for details on how to donate.

Dangers of water buckets, tubs

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death for children 1 to 4 years old. The agency says just a few inches of water can be deadly.

A study from the commission that looked at numbers from 2010-2014 found there were 684 incidents involving children under 5 years old in products such as bathtubs, buckets, bath seats, toilets, and landscaping. Of those, 434 resulted in death, and 233 resulted in injuries.
