10-year-old girl gravely wounded in Becker crash to be taken off life support

The injuries that Cassy Maurer sustained in the Becker, Minnesota, crash that killed her father proved too great for her to overcome.

After more than a week by her side at the hospital, family members told reporters on Thursday that the 10-year-old girl is being removed from life support, according to KARE 11.

She was one of several people injured in the July 21 wreck, which occurred when a pick-up truck driven by a teenager allegedly ran a red light and struck the van Cassy was riding in.

The impact seriously wounded the girl and her father, Charles Mauerer. Both were airlifted to North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale, where the 54-year-old was pronounced dead.

Also injured was Cassy's sister, a family friend, and two occupants of the pick-up truck. All of their wounds were not life-threatening.

According to an update on Cassy's CaringBridge page, a "second consultation with medical staff" this week ended in an agreement between doctors and family members that Cassy "cannot withstand the injuries she's sustained," and that stopping treatment is the appropriate step.

The update also says the girl's organs will be donated after she has passed, as her family feels Cassy would want to help as many people as possible.

KARE 11 she will be disconnected from life support either Friday or Saturday.

Meanwhile, criminal charges against the 18-year-old behind the wheel of the pick-up that hit the Maurers' van are possible.

As investigations into the accident continue, the young man's family maintain he was not driving the truck at the time, KSTP reports.
