At least 1,000 volunteers are on the hook to help pick up trash along Minnehaha Creek and some of the famed Minneapolis lakes Sunday.

Minnesota Public Radio reports that the annual event – which really needs a name, doesn't it? – will start at Lake Hiawatha in south Minneapolis, and volunteers will be shuttled to sites along the creek as well as the shorelines of lakes Calhoun, Harriet and Nokomis.

(Hey, you missed a spot. What about Cedar? Lake of the Isles?)

The work may be down and dirty, but the goals are lofty: "Our goal is to collect two tons of trash," Telly Mamayek, a spokeswoman for the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District, tells MPR. That was the level reached last year. Wow. Is the City of Lakes really that dirty?

The event – the Great Minneapolis Trash Off? – is from 9 a.m. to noon, says MPR, and ends with a free lunch and weighing of the trash at Lake Hiawatha Park.
