11 suspected members of violent gangs indicted on felony weapons charges

A federal indictment accuses 11 men of illegally obtaining and possessing guns as members of two associated gangs that operate in Hennepin County.

The U.S. Attorney's Office announced the arrests and indictments Friday morning. Charges against the men are all tied to firearms – possessing a weapon, conspiracy, or lying during the purchase of a firearm.

“As charged, these defendants engaged in armed robbery and drug dealing to fund the illegal purchases of firearms they used to conduct gang warfare," U.S. Attorney Andrew Luger said in a statement.

The indictment says the suspects are "leaders, prominent members, and close associates" of two related gangs: the “1-9” (also known as "19 Block Dipset" or "1-9 Vice Lords") and “Stick Up Boys.”

Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek said the gangs are believed to be responsible for "numerous acts of violence."

One of the more prominent acts of violence came four years ago, when Derrick Martin was fatally shot on a popular running and bike path on Lake Calhoun. At the time, police said Martin was a member of the Taliban gang, and his slaying was an act of retaliation in an ongoing feud between them and 1-9/Stick Up Boys, the Star Tribune reported.

In 2013, MPR's Brandt Williams sorted through gun crime data. Claims of Stick Up Boys or 1-9 members being involved appear frequently in the lengthy breakdown.

More recently, police say 1-9 and Stick Up Boys were involved in a Nov. 1 shooting at a Brooklyn Center Denny's, WCCO reports. Two people were injured in the shooting, one suffering life-threatening injuries.
