A 12-year-old boy has been charged with killing his brother by stabbing him at their Minnetonka apartment on Saturday evening.

The boy has been charged by the Hennepin County Attorney on Monday, in connection with the dead of his 16-year-old brother.

The teenager was found with a stab wound to the chest at a residence in the apartment complex at 11367 Fairfield Road.

It's believe the injury was inflicted by a kitchen knife.

"The youth’s case will be handled in the juvenile court system," the Hennepin County Attorney's Office said. "Because of his age, no other information is public."

The boys' mother and other family members were home at the time.

The brothers both attended Hopkins Public Schools, which issued this statement on Monday.

"Our hearts and thoughts go out to the family who is experiencing an unthinkable loss. As a district, and as a school community, we are focused on providing care and support to students and staff who are struggling to process this tragic news.

"We have deployed our crisis management team and grief counselors are currently available to students and staff. We will keep these supports in place for as long as needed."
