A month-long investigation by the Pine County Sheriff's Office into allegations of animal abuse at a farm near Pine City came to an end last week.

FOX 9 reports a search warrant executed by deputies last Thursday found more than 100 animals living in poor conditions.

Approximately 12 horses, 21 dogs, 18 ducks and 84 chickens were removed from the property.

All of the horses were described as "starving" and two had to be put down a day after the seizure.

The sheriff's office told WDIO that the birds were "covered in filth and, at least one of the ducks was unable to float when placed into a cleaning tub."

Investigators also found "filthy pens and makeshift enclosures," FOX 9 said.

The case will be reviewed by the Pine County Attorney's office for possible charges.

Minnesota law states the owner, who has not been identified, has 10 days to file a request for judicial review of the seizure of the animals. If the owner does not file, the sheriff's office can decide the fate of the remaining animals on Sept. 24, KARE 11 reports.

In the meantime, the cost of caring for the animals has already surpassed $10,000.

Donations can be made in care of the Pine County Sheriff’s Posse/Horse Fund, and mailed or delivered to the Pine County Sheriff’s Office.

WDIO has a slideshow of some of the animals.
