A 14-year-old Minnesotan fell to her death while hiking in California

She was on vacation with her parents and brother.

A northwestern Minnesota family's vacation turned tragic this week when a 14-year-old fell during a hike and died of her injuries.

Chloe Conn of Detroit Lakes was with her parents and older brother at Lake Tahoe, admiring the view from a boulder when she slipped and fell about 50 feet, the Sacramento Bee reports.

The accident happened Wednesday in northern California's Sierra Nevada mountains on a trail that leads down to the lake.

The El Dorado County Sheriff's office says an off-duty officer happened to be in the area at the time and began CPR on the girl. There were more life-saving efforts at the scene when first responders arrived. But her injuries were severe and she died later at a hospital, the sheriff's office says.

The family was in Emerald Bay State Park on the Vikingsholm Trail. It's a one mile trail, the state says, but it drops 400 feet in elevation.

She'd just finished eighth grade

It was an end-of-the-school-year trip for the Conn family. D-L Online says Chloe had just finished eighth grade at Detroit Lakes Middle School, where her mother, Stacy Conn, is a nursing assistant. Chloe's brother Christian, 17, had finished his junior year at the high school.

Middle School principal Mike Suckert told the Bee Chloe was an "outstanding young lady" who had taken part in math competitions and the school musical.

“She was a bubbly, friendly, just well-liked kid,” Suckert said. “Everyone who came in contact with her liked her.”

D-L Online reports a message to parents from the school district says Chloe was "a true Laker" who was an excellent and beloved student, adding: "Middle School counselors and staff are available as students, staff, and the community become aware of Chloe’s passing. During this tragic time, we ask that you please keep the Conn family in your thoughts and prayers."
