149 Minnesota National Guard members received a sendoff from friends and supporters in Cambridge Sunday as the troops head off for a year-long deployment in Afghanistan.

The 850th Horizontal Engineer Company is based in Cambridge and the city's mayor was among those paying tribute to the soldiers. The Isanti County News reports Mayor Marlys Palmer expressed her pride in the troops and said they are teachers, coaches, comrades, and peacemakers, as well as soldiers.

The engineering company builds and maintains roads and other infrastructure. A sergeant tells the Isanti County paper the troops will also be hauling heavy equipment in support of the operating bases throughout Afghanistan.

The Minnesota National Guard has a page with more background on the 850th, which is nicknamed the Renegades.
