16 inches of snow buries Minnesota; Up next: cold

Some parts of the Twin Cities got up to 16 inches of snow as winter made a spectacular comeback in a Sunday storm that was far bigger than any last year.

Next up: freezing temps. Monday in the metro will be cold and cloudy, then gradually becoming more sunny, with a high near 11 and wind chill values between -4 and 3, the National Weather Service says.

The commute could be tricky for some. MPR has a wrap-up of some transportation issues. Snowplows were at work in St. Paul and Minneapolis, which both declared snow emergencies.

A few totals from late Sunday, as reported by the Pioneer Press: Forest Lake 13.5 inches; Burnsville 12.4; Mounds View and Stillwater 11; North St. Paul, Eagan and New Richmond, Wis., each had about 9.

Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport recorded 10.2 inches. More than 150 flights were canceled, WCCO reported.

As of 8 p.m., there were 587 crashes on the roads, KARE 11 reported.

There was at least one fatal crash, on Sunday afternoon, involving a semi tanker and two cars U.S. Highway 61 south of Red Wing in southeast Minnesota, the Rochester Post Bulletin reported. Five others were injured in that accident.

Metrodome officials kept the heat cranked up on Sunday to keep snow off the roof, the Associated Press reported. Two years ago, 17 inches of snow tore holes in the inflatable dome, which needed a $22 million repair.

Wasn't this supposed to be a much smaller storm? It was a tough one to predict, with snowfall totals doubling in a span of 12 hours on Saturday, meteorologist Paul Douglas writes in the Star Tribune.
