A 16-year-old boy was fatally struck by a car that fled in north Minneapolis Tuesday evening.
According to the Minneapolis Police Department, at about 8:37 p.m., a suspect driving northbound on Fremont Avenue North hit a 16-year-old who was either walking or skateboarding on westbound 51st Avenue North.
Police arrived to find the 16-year-old boy lying in the street near the 5100 block of Fremont Avenue North in "very critical condition." He was taken to the hospital, where he later died.
After hitting the boy, the suspect fled. He continued driving northbound and hit several parked cars and then tried to turn onto 52nd Avenue North, but left the roadway and stopped in a yard. That's where police later took him into custody.
Police believe drugs or alcohol may be a contributing factor in the crash.
The boy's identity hasn't been released.
