16-year-old driver dies in southeast Minnesota crash

Authorities are investigating a fatal crash that claimed the life of a 16-year-old on Thursday. 

The crash happened just after 1 p.m. at the intersection of Hwy. 74 and County Road 39 in Elba Township, which is approximately 20 miles west of Winona or about 28 miles east of Rochester in Winona County. 

The Minnesota State Patrol reports that the 16-year-old driving a 2013 Toyota Corolla was eastbound on County Road 39 and failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection of Hwy. 74. The Corolla entered the intersection and was struck by a 2019 Ford F-250 that was southbound on Hwy. 74.  

The teen was transported to Mayo Clinic Hospital, St. Marys Campus in Rochester and pronounced dead. The driver's identity has not been released. 

Five people, two adults and three children, from North Carolina were in the Ford truck. The adults suffered minor injuries and the children, ages 10, 12 and 15, were uninjured.
