16 years later: Minnesota remembers the 9/11 attacks

Events around the state will commemorate the anniversary.

Thousands of people are expected Monday at the site of the former World Trade Center in New York, where a day of remembrance will mark the 16th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

However, Minnesotans who wish to pay their respects to the nearly 3,000 who died that day have some opportunities to do so here at home.

Here's a quick snapshot of a couple events happening in the state on Monday.

In the Twin Cities

One of the Twin Cities' larger and longest-running 9/11 commemorations is at Lake Harriet in Minneapolis.

The ceremony goes from 5-8:30 p.m. at the Lake Harriet bandshell, where organizers say an average of 3,000 to 4,000 people attend every year.

Events include a free concert, a color guard salute, and a flag ceremony. The group behind the commemoration warns people to get there early, as seating is open and parking is limited.

Elsewhere, the Interstate 35W bridge in Minneapolis will be lit red, white, and blue Monday night.

Central Minnesota

The City of St. Cloud will hold a memorial ceremony at 4:30 p.m. outside the police station on 11th Avenue North, KNSI says

The St. Clout Times has a list of other events happening around the area.

Flags at half-staff

Meanwhile, by order of Gov. Mark Dayton, all U.S. and Minnesota flags at state and federal properties will be flown at half-staff until sunset Monday.
