Investigators are looking into what started a barn fire that killed about 180 pigs on a farm in southern Minnesota.

The Albert Lea Tribune reports the fire at the Ron Kruger farm in Mansfield Township broke out Tuesday morning while Kruger was in nearby barn. His wife, Jane, tells the newspaper that her husband attempted to save the pigs but was pulled out by firefighters.

About 30 of the hogs killed were piglets, the rest were pigs between 120 and 150 pounds.

The Krugers have been raising pigs for 45 years.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
