19-year-old killed in crash in St. Paul; driver injured
A 19-year-old was killed and another was injured in a crash in St. Paul early Thursday.
A 19-year-old woman from Detroit Lakes was driving on Shepard Road near the ramp to southbound Interstate 35E at 12:32 p.m. when she went off the road and crashed, the Minnesota State Patrol's report says.
She was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Her passenger, 19-year-old Shaterries Monique Barlow of Minneapolis, was taken to the hospital, where she died.
The State Patrol says that Barlow was not wearing a seat belt. It also said alcohol may have been a factor in the crash, but this has not been officially confirmed.
So far this year, at least 234 people have died in traffic-related crashes on Minnesota roads. At this time last year, 180 people had died, the Minnesota Office of Traffic Safety says.
At least 44 of those who have died this year were not wearing a seatbelt and at least 54 people died in alcohol-related crashes, data show.
