1996 rape suspect arrested in Minneapolis cold case

A 17-year-old cold case involving the random rape of an elderly woman in north Minneapolis is finally closed thanks to new DNA technology and a federal grant.

WCCO reports an 82-year-old woman walking her dog in an alley just steps away from her house in the 3300 block of Aldridge Ave. N. was approached by a man in November of 1996. The suspect, unknown to the victim, pulled the woman between two garages and demanded money.

When she told him she didn't have any, she was raped.

A grant from the National Institute of Justice is allowing Minneapolis investigators to review unsolved cases from 1991 to 2007, WCCO reported.

DNA testing that wasn't available nearly two decades ago was conducted and the results put 37-year-old Kevin Haynes at the scene of the crime.

Haynes, who currently resides in Wisconsin, was charged with first-degree criminal misconduct. He'll be brought back to Minnesota for a court appearance this week.

Earlier this year, a tip call prompted investigators to reopen a 1996 homicide case involving Anne Dunlap, 21, who was stabbed to death and left in the trunk of her car in a Lake Street parking lot.
