The Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system is asking state lawmakers for newer technology and equipment to train workers in high demand fields, the Star Tribune reports.
Businesses in desperate need for welders, nurses or heavy equipment operators have also agreed to match the $21 million MnSCU is seeking.
“It’s a challenge for us to keep up-to-date with the equipment needs in some of these technologies. We need to partner with businesses in multiple ways to do it," Mary Rothchild, senior director for workforce development for the system of state universities and two-year colleges, told the newspaper.
The state chairwoman of the Minnesota State University Student Association, Moriah Miles, supports MnSCU's budget request, according to the Star Tribune. Her group assumes a 3 percent tuition hike in each of the next two years.
“Many of our universities are training students on equipment that is out-of-date,” said Miles, a senior at Minnesota State University, Mankato. “This is one investment we need to get our system back to the level our students and employers expect.”
Meanwhile, Trustees at the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system have eliminated the controversial performance-based bonuses for its executives, including the chancellor, vice chancellors and college and university presidents, Minnesota Public Radio reports.
